Do you ever look into your closet and think, ‘ I don’t have anything to wear!’?
Does this happen often???
Yes, that’s exactly how I used to feel. I was an avid shopper and I used to have a lot of clothes yet I felt that way. Then I would go shopping and be happy for few days and again after that ‘ I don’t have anything to wear!’ One day I thought what is the point of buying all these clothes if 2 days later I will feel the same again!!! Around the same time I was getting serious about saving money. I used to spend a lot and save very less and was looking for ways to save money so this was my ticket. I’m listing below reasons why I stopped shopping frequently:
No long-term happiness
I realized, this added no value in the bigger picture of life. I’m not saying it does not add value in life but what I mean is the amount of money I was spending was not worth it. It does make me happy when I look good and feel good but there is no need to spend a ton of money for that – specially when you are not saving as needed.
Spent more – saved less
I was young and silly and spent a lot of money. Reality hit me and I quickly realized I need to decide what is my priority and it was a no brainer – Savings money was important. Saving money now would help me buy a house which is important, and saving money for retirement buys me peace of mind.
Quality vs. Quantity
I decided I wanted to buy quality products vs. quantity. I want to get quality products that last longer and that look classy than keep buying a lot of okay-ish clothes. Now I invest in quality coats and boots which lasts me for years so I don’t need to buy every season.
How I did it?
Buy only when /what is needed
I made a simple rule that I will buy thing only when I need them rather than when I see some thing cute J. This becomes habit – the more you control more conscious you will be come. Don’t get me wrong I still do buy things I need, like I used to go to Sephora and try new stuffs and come home with a lot of stuffs. Now I buy only the things I regularly use and I don’t do random purchase.
Do not go to mall/ online shopping
To take care of above, I stopped going to mall. If I see I will want, if I want I will buy so I stopped going to the mall and now I don’t see which equals to I don’t want which eventually means I do not buy.
I had to do same with online shopping. I used to look around and shop online a lot. Once I stopped looking around there were less things that tempted me.
Treat on Birthday or special occasions
I do treat myself with something really nice on birthdays or some special occasions. This helps you in sticking with the plan. If you completely deprive yourself you may not be able to stick with your plan.
Be creative and Be resourceful
I started to be creative and mix and match the pieces I already have and create new looks. I also switched to using honey as face pack instead of buying expensive face masks. I started doing my own hot oil treatments or oil massage instead of buying expensive hair products.
Shop on season end sale
I shop when there is season end sale in Jan/Feb. and July/Aug. That is the time you will score the best deals. I do spoil myself and buy enough key pieces so that is how I can stay without shopping all the time.
Hope this helps you to shop less frequently too. Share with me what all you do to cut down your shopping.
